Mexico’s folk music and dance styles are very diverse and largely unknown outside of Mexico. There is son jarocho, son huasteco, gusto, son istmeño, chilenas, and over thirty other styles. Different regions of the country have unique instruments, repertoire and techniques rarely heard outside those communities. Sones de México Ensemble, a specialist in these regional styles, is your guide in this captivating multi-media presentation and concert on Mexico’s musical geography. Over twenty-five folk instruments are featured, along with lush vocal arrangements and dance demonstrations.
Last year’s free concert by Sones de México Ensemble – “The Extended Family of Mexican Guitars: A Showcase of Mexican Folk Stringed Instruments” – on October 25, 2015, ended with a full house of all ages dancing joyously and an extended standing ovation. This is exciting, entrancing and delightful music by a world-renowned ensemble, not be missed!
