Colony Presents: Simon Joyner, Donny Dinero

August 24, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

THURSDAY 8.24.17

Simon Joyner is a renowned American singer-songwriter who first came to prominence during the Lo-Fi movement of the early 90’s alongside contemporaries mining similar territory like Will Oldham, Peter Jefferies, the Mountain Goats, and Bill Callahan. Joyner
was championed early by the late British DJ, John Peel, who famously played Joyner’s 1994 LP, “The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll”, start to finish on one of his BBC programs, initially making Joyner more well known overseas than in his own country. He is often referred to as one of the forefathers of the Omaha music scene and an influence on his friend, Conor Oberst, of Bright Eyes (who he recently performed with at Carnegie Hall).

Following the mercurial path of heroes like Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Joyner has been releasing literate and challenging albums
since the release of his first album, Room Temperature, in 1993. His
discography includes twenty-two full-length recordings and numerous singles and guest appearances. A book of his lyrics was released in 2016 under the title “Only Love Can Bring You Peace: Selected Lyrics (1990-2014).” He tours the United States and Europe semi-regularly and is the co-owner of the Grapefruit
Records label which operates from offices in Brooklyn, NY and Omaha, NE.

“Omaha has given us the reigning heir to Henry Miller’s dark emotional mirror, Townes Van Zandt’s three-chord moan, and Lou Reed’s warehouse minimalism: his name is Simon Joyner.” — Gillian Welch

“Pound for pound Simon Joyner is my favorite lyricist of all time. He
has shades of all the greats (Van Zandt, Cohen, Dylan) but exists in a space all his own … He truly is an American songwriting treasure. It is my hope that more people will discover his music and share in the unique joy that it brings.” — Conor Oberst

His latest release, RUNNER was engineered and co-produced by Nick Kinsey (Kevin Morby, Elvis Perkins) in their mutual residence of Stanfordville at Kinsey’s home studio, The Chicken Shack. RUNNER explores the world of a stale existence but the longing for something more. A life that only one person can live, choices only one person can make, dreams only one person can dream. Often curious of the stories of everyday people: the old man in line at the hardware store, the single mother of three who brings her children to the bar, the farmer who lives off of pennies from weekly market sales, a person born into a life of unfortunate and uncontrollable circumstances. Everyone has a story but not always someone to tell.
Though often seen performing solo but also occasionally bringing fresh perspective and energy to live performances are longtime friend and musical confidant Keven Lareau along with upstate workhorses, Andrew Weaver and Chris May.
Currently residing in Stanfordville NY, Donny has grown highly passionate in engineering and producing his own music where he currently is working on his next musical endeavor to be released sometime in late 2017.
