From Captain Beefheart to Jeff Buckley, Leonard Bernstein to Lou Reed, John Cale to Patti Smith, Allen Ginsberg to Nick Cave, among countless others, there’s never been a guitarist like the legendary Gary Lucas. Quinn’s is proud to welcome back Mr. Lucas, who will perform a solo acoustic set on Sunday, December 3 at 8 PM. Beacon musician Jordan Shapiro will sit in with Gary during his set. Opening will be Curtis Foster and blackmajicforest. A $10 admission will be requested at the door.

Gary Lucas is a world-class guitarist, a Grammy-nominated songwriter and composer, an international recording artist with over 30 acclaimed solo albums to date, and a soundtrack composer for film and television. Lucas was a member of the final Magic Band of the legendary cult icon Captain Beefheart band. He formed the band Gods and Monsters in 1988, which eventually featured the late singer and guitarist Jeff Buckley. Lucas co-wrote two of Jeff Buckley’s most famous hits, “Grace” and “Mojo Pin”, which opened Jeff’s double-platinum Sony album Grace, which MOJO Magazine named the #1 Modern Classic Rock Album.

Lucas has also played and collaborated with Leonard Bernstein, Allen Ginsberg, Lou Reed, John Cale, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, David Johansen, Chris Cornell, Adrian Sherwood, Billy Bang, Bob Neuwirth, Bob Weir, Bryan Ferry, Damo Suzuki, Dave Liebman, DJ Spooky, Dr. John, Fred Schneider, Future Sound of London, Geoff Muldaur, Graham Parker, Jann Klose, Joe Lovano, John Sebastian, John Zorn, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Kristin Diable, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Matthew Sweet, Melissa Mars, Onetwo, Peter Hammill, Peter Stampfel, Richard Barone, Roswell Rudd, Sebastian Doggart, Steve Swallow, The Dark Poets, Van Dyke Parks and Warren Haynes, among many others.

Some of these collaborations appear on his retrospective album Improve the Shining Hour, which also features his film and TV music for ABC News, 20/20 and Turning Point. He has produced albums for composer/saxophonists Tim Berne and Peter Gordon, and for the French avant-rock band Tanger. He co-wrote Joan Osborne’s Grammy-nominated song “Spider Web” from her triple-platinum album Relish.

Multi-instrumentalist Jordan Shapiro has been performing in various styles of music for over 20 years. Classically trained on piano since age 5, he graduated from Univ. of Michigan School of Music where he studied jazz and composition. Jordan has performed on keyboards in many different ensembles, including touring for many years as keyboardist/vocalist for the Frank Zappa tribute band Project/Object, featuring former Zappa vocalists. In 2015, Jordan toured Australia as a member of Gary Lucas’ Gods and Monsters, performing the music of Jeff Buckley and Tim Buckley with Martha Wainwright and other vocalists. Jordan plays keyboards on the upcoming release “World of Captain Beefheart”, a new band put together by former Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas and ex-LaBelle vocalist Nona Hendryx. Jordan also leads a psychedelic jazz-fusion Balkan folk project called “Choban Elektrik”, which released its debut CD in 2014. His bluegrass band “Astrograss”, formed in 2003, performs yearly at the legendary Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival and has released 3 full length CDs of original music.
