New York-based vocalist, composer and bandleader, Joe Benjamin, is currently at the helm of “Joe Benjamin and A Mighty Handful”, a genre-bending 10-piece band with whom he has gained a devoted following in New York City, and toured sold-out concert halls throughout Europe.
Joe’s truly all-encompassing music, combines an accessible pop-rock songwriting style with the lush, complex harmonies of modern jazz and the intoxicating rhythms of funk. His gift for storytelling the lyrical content of his songs weave detailed accounts of his life in New York City – from finding love to finding bed bugs; to gripes about his “First World Problems”; to his plaintive narratives of bittersweet nostalgia.
The arrangements the band plays (which are largely the work of the brilliant German-born and New York-based composer, arranger and saxophonist Martin Seiler), are both spectacular and nuanced, and are brought to life by Joe’s star-studded band, whose members each bring their own unique voice to the ensemble.
Since the band was founded in February 2013 they have headlined at many of the premier venues in New York City for both jazz and rock music including Brooklyn Bowl, BAM, Bowery Electric, Rockwood Music Hall and Drom, and have been featured performers at the Arts & Ideas Festival in New Haven and the Jazz Up July Festival in Stamford, as well as a 2017 US Tour. In May 2015, the band embarked on a tour in Germany, selling out concerts throughout the country and gaining attention from both local and national press, including numerous TV and Radio appearances. Their first full-length debut album was released in January 2017 under the Reyab label.
