Led by New Hampshire native Will Sheff, Okkervil River boasts a rootsy, wide-ranging sound. Formed in 1998, the group has performed with acts such as the Decemberists, the New Pornographers, the National, and the late Lou Reed.

The band’s upcoming album, “Away,” scheduled for release in September, includes a song called “Okkervil River R.I.P.” Sheff has enigmatically described the album as “not really an Okkervil River album and it’s also my favorite Okkervil River album.”

The New York Times has raved, “[Sheff] writes like a novelist. His songs are full of elegant phrases and unexpected images.” Sheff’s idol, Lou Reed, named Okkervil River one of his favorite contemporary bands, asked them to open for him, telling Sheff, “You have a classic rock and roll voice.”
