(June 22, 2016) – AJ Cafe’s third annual clambake and fundraiser will take place this Saturday, June 25. The event will offer all you can eat clams, drink specials, live music, and raffles to benefit the venue’s selected charity.
This year, the event’s charity is a very personal one to the venue. In March of this year, AJ Cafe lost a dear friend, Stephen Campbell. According to the venue, “he was kind-hearted soul, who is missed by many friends and family. He was an avid dog lover, and left behind his dog Houdini. In his memory a ‘Gofundme’ page was created in order to have a service dog trained in his honor.”
Puppies Behind Bars (www.puppiesbehindbars.com) trains incarcerated individuals to raise service dogs for veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or Traumatic Brain Injury. The puppy will arrive at about 8 weeks of age, and stay with his ‘raiser’ until approximately two years of age. The puppy will be raised to become a well-behaved working dog, learning and performing close to 100 commands which are meant to aide those in need. It will also give hope and a second chance to not only the inmate who raises it, but also the veteran who will ultimately be partnered with the dog.
Steve’s family will receive monthly updates on the puppy’s progress, along with pictures as the pup grows. When the puppy graduates, they will also receive a journal written by the raiser which tells the story of the puppies life.
