ROCKERS GIVING BACK – LOCAL BAND DEDICATED TO HELPING OTHERS BY RAISING FUNDS FOR VARIOUS CAUSES

(July 6, 2017) – It’s no secret that there is a myriad of live music events throughout the area every day of the week (hence, Bands Near Me!). The community is offered a wide array of music genres in every county, and the choices are limitless. One local band is doing something that many others don’t – giving back and paying it forward.

Niteshade, a band that plays “classic rock with an edge” is on a mission to help others. Throughout the year, the band performs at local venues to raise money for a variety of local charities. Their generosity and overall good Karma has helped with a toy collection for the New York Riders, the Peekskill Fire Department’s July 4th Fireworks Fund, Making Strides For Breast Cancer, Woofstock (to raise money for Sycamore Bark Park in Mahopac), Biker Run (to help those on the road to recovery – a ride to remember Jeff Coursen) and St. Christopher’s Inn (a temporary homeless shelter dedicated to helping men in crisis).

On Saturday, July 22 the band will be performing at Tina’s Rest in Holmes to raise money for Putnam Dental Missions, a registered 501 (c)(3) dedicated to providing free dental care to those in need.

ABOUT PUTNAM DENTAL MISSIONS

Putnam Dental Missions was created by the staff at Putnam Dental Associates in Brewster, and has been providing free dental care and oral health education to those in need for the past five years.

Each year in November, a team of Putnam Dental Associates staff and patients travel to Palmarito, a very poor village in the Dominican Republic. The need for basic dental care is overwhelming, and because of the enormous amount of those in need, the team has yet to be able to serve everyone who needs help. In fact, the first year so many local residents were in such intolerable pain as the result of a lack of preventative care, the team was forced to extract more teeth than they were able to save. While the group is slowly progressing in saving more teeth, the need is still critical. Working conditions are deplorable: lawn chairs placed on concrete slabs act as dental chairs; flashlights as the only source of light to help the team perform procedures; sheets hung from the ceiling as privacy screens, and so on.

Each year, the team also participates in Dentistry From The Heart. Hosted at the Putnam Dental Associates office in Brewster, the day long event is open to the public, and provides free dental care to local residents in need, offering them a free dental cleaning, a tooth extraction or filling. 2017 marked the sixth year that Putnam Dental Associates have provided a free day of dentistry.

Due to the fact that Dentistry From The Heart is first come – first served to the first 100 people, lines often form very early in the morning. Each attendee will meet with one of the team members to discuss their highest priority/concern and will then be seen by a hygienist or dentist for the appropriate treatment.

Many other local businesses also participate as well, making this a true community event. Thanks to the generous volunteers, the team is now able to offer a variety of other services including a blood drive, eye exams, chiropractic care, dog adoptions, massage and many others.

Since the organization is non-profit, it is 100% volunteer and each pays his/her own way. In order to raise the funds needed to purchase supplies (such as multi-vitamins and equipment), the team hosts a variety of fundraisers throughout the year.

According to Toni Pernesiglio Viau, one of the founding members of Putnam Dental Missions, “The emotional connections made and the sense of pride in the work we have done fuels us to want to do even more. There is much more to do, and we are constantly at work preparing for our next event and anything that we can do in between. These events have grown far beyond our expectations, and we are beyond thrilled to be able to make a difference right here, in our own back yard.”

In order to raise additional funds, Toni re-purposes discarded and broken jewelry and creates beautiful pieces of jewelry to sell at local markets etc.

Niteshade will be performing throughout the evening and will be collecting funds for Putnam Dental Missions. Several members from the Mission team will be on hand to answer any questions and to support the band’s efforts. Toni will also have some pieces from her collection for sale.

If you have broken jewelry, or any pieces you wish to donate you can either bring them to Tina’s Rest the night of the show, or contact Toni at putnamdentalmissions@gmail.com.

If you are interested in making a donation, please send a check made payable to Putnam Dental Missions, Inc. c/o Putnam Dental Associates. 2435 Route 6 Brewster, New York 10509.
